1st GARC Roundtable

On May 30th, 2023, GARC had its first official Roundtable event with Numata Foundation Visiting Fellow Professor Chih-yu Shih of National Taiwan University. Professor Shih gave a talk on the role of love in the realm of international politics. Leaning on his oft-cited concept of the Balance of Relationships, Professor Shih referred to Confucianism to investigate the way relations are practiced by states (esp. by China). In so doing, he made curious distinctions from the way political relations are maintained elsewhere under the auspices of liberalism. Professor Shih’s talk provided the foundation for a less-Western re-learning of politics and for a thought-provoking and curious discussion. As the participants of the Roundtable consisted of Philosophers, Political Theorists, Anthropologists, and scholars from many other disciplines, the event certainly functioned as a jumping board for future critical thought in World Politics.
